The 2012 Season Starts Here
The last week has seen a flurry of activity as championships big and small held their annual media days and opening tests, with some already even getting down to racing proper. The British Touring Car Championship heads strongly into a new all-turbo generation and this year boasts 10 models from nine different marques on its 24-car grid, including the technicolour liveried return of the MG name.
The BTCC season opener hits Brands Hatch on 1st April, followed a week later by the first rounds of the British GT Championship and the British F3 International Series at Oulton Park. While some single-seater formulae have struggled in recent times - Formula Renault postponing its UK series due to poor entries - British F3 continues to attract young talent. With recent champions including the Scuderia Toro Rosso pairing of Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne, its status as a stepping-stone to Formula 1 is hard to dispute.

Europe's fastest growing race organiser will enter its seventh season in 2012 with an expanded calendar of 34 race events. MSVR also operates 20 of the UK's most successful and prestigious club racing championships and series. Representatives from each were interviewed by MSV Chief Executive Jonathan Palmer during a morning press conference.
"It's quite easy to think that motor racing is dominated by the big events," said Palmer. "But I think in many ways the club racing scene is a much better indication of the economic health of motorsport, and actually that health is very good indeed. Competitors want better value than ever and that's quite right. They want quality of events, efficient timetables, quality of racing and it's the achievement of it that is a significant factor in the success of MSVR."
Amongst the announcements were four new championships/series, headed by the FIA backed Radical European Masters. The championship, which will see drivers take on the best circuits in Europe, joins the Radical UK Cup and Clubman’s Cup under the MSVR banner.
The successful Champion of Brands Formula Ford series has inspired the launch of the SuperSeries, which plans to unite the European Formula Ford community, with four races planned at Kirkistown (Ireland), Brands Hatch, Croix en Ternois (France) and Monza (Italy).
In Tin Tops, the Golf GTI Championship and VAG Trophy are expanding with the introduction of the MK4 Golf GTI/TDI Challenge.
Club MSV, the trackday division of MSV, which runs the Trackday Trophy and Team Trophy for novice racers, announced plans to move into two wheeled events with the establishment of the Bike Trackday Trophy.
The popular Production BMW Championship will also receive a boost in 2012, following the announcement of a lucrative sponsorship deal with Italian tyre firm Marangoni Tyres.
While there were plenty of new additions to MSVR unveiled on the day, Palmer also hailed the success of the F3 Cup, which has enjoyed big growth particularly since joining the MSVR fold in 2011. Last season Kent driver Aaron Steele dominated the F3 Cup winning 14 of the 18 races and this season it is set to expand after gaining championship status and a new set of regulations.
"What is particularly exciting is the evolution of the F3 Cup," Palmer continued. "We took it over and I could certainly see the potential of running older F3 cars, which are still fantastic cars full of technology. In 2012 F3 Cup becomes a championship on the back of expanding grids and it's looking very exciting indeed."
Following the press conference, track sessions were held for all of MSVR's varied range of series, which also includes GT Cup, MINI Challenge, Lotus on Track Elise Trophy, Lotus Cup UK, Lotus Cup Europe and the Monoposto Championship.
Fans, who enjoyed free access to the venue for the event, were also treated to laps by a 1989 Team Lotus Formula One car, which will be present at the MSVR-run Lotus Festival held at Brands Hatch on 18/19 August.
