The 2012 Season Starts Here
The last week has seen a flurry of activity as championships big and small held their annual media days and opening tests, with some already even getting down to racing proper. The British Touring Car Championship heads strongly into a new all-turbo generation and this year boasts 10 models from nine different marques on its 24-car grid, including the technicolour liveried return of the MG name.
The BTCC season opener hits Brands Hatch on 1st April, followed a week later by the first rounds of the British GT Championship and the British F3 International Series at Oulton Park. While some single-seater formulae have struggled in recent times - Formula Renault postponing its UK series due to poor entries - British F3 continues to attract young talent. With recent champions including the Scuderia Toro Rosso pairing of Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne, its status as a stepping-stone to Formula 1 is hard to dispute.

The Silverstone Classic is the world’s largest classic motorsport festival which takes over the Northampton circuit over the weekend of 22-24 July, and the E-type's birthday will be marked with two headline races featuring up to 58 examples of the model. In addition, the organisers are hoping to set a world record with a cavalcade of 1,000 road-going examples parading around the 3.66-mile long Grand Prix circuit.
No need to be disappointed if you voted for something other than the slinky Jag - the three day festival promises to be action-packed from dawn to dusk. With 22 races planned for huge variety of historic and classic racing cars.
Among the highlights are no fewer than six races for Grand Prix cars – with more than 100 examples covering six decades of the sport – plus events for Touring Cars from the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s, Le Mans racers, GTs and the awesome Group C sports cars of the 1980s. There’s also a celebrity challenge with stars such as Heston Blumenthal, Jo Wood and Brendan Cole taking to the track in identical Morgan sports cars to raise money for the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK.
Off-track, the entertainment includes free live concerts from the likes of Suzi Quatro and 10cc, a steam traction rally, a period fun fair, go-karting, a lawnmower grand prix, aerobatic displays with a Spitfire and Mustang as well as The Blades aerobatic display team and the Red Devils parachute display team. Not forgetting the fact that more than 120 car clubs will be displaying more than 7,000 classics so the car parks should be a show in themselves. If you've not been to a classic show before, the Silverstone event is a pretty good bet for a good family day out - circuit food should be above the usual motorsport par too, with Jamie Oliver’s Fabulous Feats taking care of the cooking in the event village.
