The 2012 Season Starts Here

2012-03-new-season-media-passThe last week has seen a flurry of activity as championships big and small held their annual media days and opening tests, with some already even getting down to racing proper. The British Touring Car Championship heads strongly into a new all-turbo generation and this year boasts 10 models from nine different marques on its 24-car grid, including the technicolour liveried return of the MG name.

The BTCC season opener hits Brands Hatch on 1st April, followed a week later by the first rounds of the British GT Championship and the British F3 International Series at Oulton Park. While some single-seater formulae have struggled in recent times - Formula Renault postponing its UK series due to poor entries - British F3 continues to attract young talent. With recent champions including the Scuderia Toro Rosso pairing of Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne, its status as a stepping-stone to Formula 1 is hard to dispute.

Lunardi and Alpina Claim Blancpain Enurance Series Pole at Silverstone

Alpina B6 (Photo: VIMAGES/Fabre )A flying performance by the nr41 Alpina B6 of Dino Lunardi gave the car its first pole position on its Blancpain Endurance Series debut. The Frenchman posted a lap time of 2:00.094 in the final qualifying session, 1.047s faster than his nearest rival. This was Stephane Ortelli in the nr32 Belgian Audi Club Team WRT Audi, who put in a late fast lap to claim a front row position for tomorrow's race ahead of Maxime Martin in the nr40 Marc VDS BMW Z4.

Championship leader Greg Franchi, along with co-drivers Andrea Piccini and Christopher Mies, will start tomorrow’s race in 14th overall and 11th in the Pro Cup Class in the nr33 Belgian Audi Club Team WRT Audi R8. Franchi needs to finish 8th in class to guarantee the title, so all eyes will be on the start tomorrow.

The Pro-Am Cup pole position was claimed by Michael Bartels at the chequered flag with a 2:01.902 lap in the nr2 Vita4One Ferrari 458, giving his teammates Niek Hommerson and Louis Machiels a good chance of taking the Pro-Am drivers title. Their rivals Frank Morel, Jean-Luc Beaubelique and Ludovic Badey, in the nr20 SOFREV ASP Ferrari, will start tomorrow's race two places further back on the grid.

The Gentlemen Trophy pole was claimed by Chris Dymond on his series debut in the Sport Garage Ferrari 430 Scuderia. However, a penalty of five grid places was imposed on his teammate Robert Hissom for taking the chequered flag twice at the end of the second qualifying session and the car will start at the back of the grid for tomorrow’s race.

Marco Cassera was the fastest of the three drivers in the sole GT3 Cup entry, the De Lorenzi Racing Porsche taking the 26th slot on tomorrow's grid.

The GT4 Cup pole was claimed by the nr70 Lotus Sport Italia Lotus Evora of Greg Mansell with a time of 2:13.939 at the chequered flag. This puts the Lotus one place, and 0.7 seconds, ahead of their championship rivals in the RJN Motorsport Nissan 370Z.

The final 3-hour race of the 2011 season will get underway at 12:15 on Sunday 9 October.
