The 2012 Season Starts Here

2012-03-new-season-media-passThe last week has seen a flurry of activity as championships big and small held their annual media days and opening tests, with some already even getting down to racing proper. The British Touring Car Championship heads strongly into a new all-turbo generation and this year boasts 10 models from nine different marques on its 24-car grid, including the technicolour liveried return of the MG name.

The BTCC season opener hits Brands Hatch on 1st April, followed a week later by the first rounds of the British GT Championship and the British F3 International Series at Oulton Park. While some single-seater formulae have struggled in recent times - Formula Renault postponing its UK series due to poor entries - British F3 continues to attract young talent. With recent champions including the Scuderia Toro Rosso pairing of Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne, its status as a stepping-stone to Formula 1 is hard to dispute.

Fiona Leggate One of Two New Drivers Confirmed by Trofeo Abarth 500 GB

Former BTCC driver Fiona Leggate and Cassey Watson are the latest competitors to be confirmed by Trofeo organisers.

Fiona will race with CMS in an Abarth 500 Assetto Corse backed by Abarth dealer Autoworld, while Cassey will compete with Lunar Racing in conjunction with Thames Abarth of Slough.

The news comes just weeks after the Zing Trofeo Abarth 500 GB announced that Sarah Franklin would race in the innaugural season of the championship. Other drivers that have been confirmed for the new series include former BTCC driver Gareth Howell and former Clio Cup Champion Ben Winrow.

The next couple of weeks will be busy for the championship as they present the new series to the media at Cadwell park on the 24th of March and then join the British GT and British F3 over the Easter weekend. The Trofeo Abarth 500 GB has picked some of the most well attended events in UK motorsport to showcase close and exciting racing that will pay tribute to the racing heritage of the Abarth brand. Having attracted a great variety of drivers from different backgrounds, the series are confident of putting on a great show for fans.

Fiona Leggate said in a statement: “I am happy to confirm that I have now committed to the Trofeo Arbath 500 championship. I cannot wait for the season to start and get in some testing before hand. I would also like to say a big thankyou to Tony Cordin at Autoworld for agreeing to support me in this effort and buying the car. I am confident that we can have a good season with this fantastic little car.”

Cassey ‘KC’ Watson was thrilled at the news of her participation in the series. She said: “I am so excited that I will be driving for Thames Abarth of Slough. This is a huge honour for me and I would like to thank everybody at Thames for having the belief in me to give me this opportunity. Also I'd like to thankchampionship organiser Paolo Callea for his help, effort and understanding as I've worked to put a package together to compete in this fantastic Championship.I am also very excited to be back with Lunar Racing as I am a massive supporter of their project and have already seen first hand how successful it is with my time in BritCar. So I have to say a massive thank you to Paul Kneeshaw without whom this year wouldn't have been possible!”

The series , which has backing from Abarth UKfor three years, also has support from selected UK Abarth dealers. Fiona and CMS have partnered with Chesterfieldbased Abarth dealer, Autoworld. The not-for-profit Lunar Racing project will have backing from Thames Abarth based in Slough.

Even though no racing has taken place yet, the Zing Trofeo Abarth 500 had attracted sponsorship from partners outside the motoring industry as well as well known suppliers and racing brands. As well as title sponsor Zing Digital Media, the series has announced partnerships with Iveco, Selenia, Michellin and MIS.
