The 2012 Season Starts Here

2012-03-new-season-media-passThe last week has seen a flurry of activity as championships big and small held their annual media days and opening tests, with some already even getting down to racing proper. The British Touring Car Championship heads strongly into a new all-turbo generation and this year boasts 10 models from nine different marques on its 24-car grid, including the technicolour liveried return of the MG name.

The BTCC season opener hits Brands Hatch on 1st April, followed a week later by the first rounds of the British GT Championship and the British F3 International Series at Oulton Park. While some single-seater formulae have struggled in recent times - Formula Renault postponing its UK series due to poor entries - British F3 continues to attract young talent. With recent champions including the Scuderia Toro Rosso pairing of Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne, its status as a stepping-stone to Formula 1 is hard to dispute.

Malvern Takes Formula Ford Win Number 14

Malvern fends of Slaghekke (Photo: Jakob Ebrey)Pole-sitter Jeroen Slaghekke (Jamun Racing Mygale SJ11) made a slower start than his team-mate Malvern and couldn't prevent the Brit from nipping by as they turned into Paddock Hill Bend for the first time. Slaghekke fought back straight away, however, and latched himself on to the tail of the leader as they dived down the hill. Behind, Tristan Mingay (JTR Mygale) ran third ahead of Spike Goddard (Jamun Racing Mygale) and Geoff Uhrhane (JTR Mygale). A collision involving the two Australians damaged the front suspension of Uhrhane's Mygale and punctured the left rear tyre of Goddard's car, forcing both to the pits. Uhrhane retired and Goddard rejoined two laps down.

Up front, Malvern fended off Slaghekke as Mingay started to close on the leaders. As he did so, he was caught in turn by Nick McBride (Jamun Mygale) and Antti Buri (Geva Racing/LMS Mygale). Buri challenged around the outside at Paddock but to no avail on lap seven.

Mingay maintained his third place until lap 14, when an incident at Clark Curve affected the race order: Chrissy Palmer (Jamun Racing) had clipped Neil Alberico’s Cliff Dempsey Racing Ray and both spun into the gravel, bringing out yellow flags. As the third place battle came by, Mingay was slower on the power entering the green flag zone and was whacked by McBride, who became airborne and lost his place to Buri, who nipped by the recovering Mingay as well. McBride fell away with damage sustained in the clash, into the clutches of the sixth place train, headed by Philippe Layac (Enigma Motorsport/RVR Mygale).

Up front, Slaghekke tried everything to pass Malvern, darting left and right at every opportunity. He tried repeatedly to pass heading into Paddock but was never fully ahead, and he tried again to get ahead as they flashed towards the chequered flag. After a good run out of the last corner, Jeroen put himself in Malvern’s slipstream but, as Malvern defended, Slaghekke didn’t know which way to go. He ran out of time and wasn’t able to pull alongside before they passed the flag, the Brit winning by just 88 thousandths of a second.

“It is never easy but that was the hardest win of the season so far,” said Malvern. “I need to find more pace to pull away but that was really hard. Jeroen tried everything.”

The Dutchman admitted his start let him down. “It was not my best and I need to work on that but I tried everything to pass him. I just couldn’t do it. It is hard to pass here as well.”

Behind Buri, Mingay took fourth from McBride who resolutely fended off Layac in sixth. The top 10 was completed by Matt Parry’s Fluid Van Diemen, Linton Stuteley’s Enigma Mygale, Dan de Zille for JTR and Scholarship Champion elect Cavan Corcoran, in his first run in a Cliff Dempsey Racing Ray. Parry was later excluded from the results for a warning flag infringement.
