The 2012 Season Starts Here
The last week has seen a flurry of activity as championships big and small held their annual media days and opening tests, with some already even getting down to racing proper. The British Touring Car Championship heads strongly into a new all-turbo generation and this year boasts 10 models from nine different marques on its 24-car grid, including the technicolour liveried return of the MG name.
The BTCC season opener hits Brands Hatch on 1st April, followed a week later by the first rounds of the British GT Championship and the British F3 International Series at Oulton Park. While some single-seater formulae have struggled in recent times - Formula Renault postponing its UK series due to poor entries - British F3 continues to attract young talent. With recent champions including the Scuderia Toro Rosso pairing of Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne, its status as a stepping-stone to Formula 1 is hard to dispute.

The Masters Historic Festival is a three day celebration of unique sports cars, saloons and single seater machinery from the past half-century, which will feature a packed programme of track action from more than ten different classic racing series.
The festival gets underway on Saturday 29 May with racing from saloon and GT cars of the 1950s, 60s and 70s on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit. Highlights include competition from a new one-make Mini series, along with a ‘David versus Goliath’ battle between 1960s V8-engined touring cars and retro Imps and Cortinas in the ‘Oldies but Goldies’ series.
On Sunday and Monday, the event moves over to the Grand Prix circuit for a celebration of Brands Hatch’s halcyon days. Headlining the bill will be the Grand Prix Masters Series, featuring the actual machinery driven by F1 legends including James Hunt, Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart. Among the unique vehicles competing will be cars from Tyrell, Williams and Arrows, along with Emmerson Fittipaldi’s 1974 championship-winning McLaren M23 and the iconic Martini Brabham BT44.
There will also be heart-pounding action from the World Sportscar Masters, featuring a huge grid of 30 powerful classic supercars including famous marques such as Ferrari, Porsche, Lola and Chevron.
In addition, paddock access is free of charge throughout the weekend to enable spectators to take a close look at the magnificent machinery competing this May Bank Holiday weekend.
