The 2012 Season Starts Here

2012-03-new-season-media-passThe last week has seen a flurry of activity as championships big and small held their annual media days and opening tests, with some already even getting down to racing proper. The British Touring Car Championship heads strongly into a new all-turbo generation and this year boasts 10 models from nine different marques on its 24-car grid, including the technicolour liveried return of the MG name.

The BTCC season opener hits Brands Hatch on 1st April, followed a week later by the first rounds of the British GT Championship and the British F3 International Series at Oulton Park. While some single-seater formulae have struggled in recent times - Formula Renault postponing its UK series due to poor entries - British F3 continues to attract young talent. With recent champions including the Scuderia Toro Rosso pairing of Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne, its status as a stepping-stone to Formula 1 is hard to dispute.

Brits Score Well at Brands Hatch F2 Weekend

Jack Clarke secures maiden F2 winKent’s Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit produced a thrilling weekend of motor sport last weekend (23/24 July), headlined by rounds nine and ten of the FIA Formula Two Championship.

The highly-competitive single seater series made its annual trip to the legendary 2.3 mile track on 22-24 July with Surrey driver Jack Clarke leading the way in the opening round to secure his maiden victory on home soil.

The 24-year-old F2 driver also received his winning trophy from Kentish athlete and double gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes who was guest of honour at the event.

Meanwhile Sunday’s second race saw another driver collect their debut F2 win, this time for Spaniard Ramon Pineiro.

Speaking after his maiden F2 win Jack Clarke said: “It's perfect. I couldn't have written that. I've not looked like knocking on the door of a win this year so to come here and to smash it so to speak is a big deal for me."

Guest Dame Kelly Holmes, who won gold in the 800m and 1500m at the 2004 Athens Olympics, added: “I had a great day watching the Formula Two championship at Brands Hatch, and what most people won’t know is that I am hoping to get into racing myself…”

Alongside the fantastic F2 races, crowds also got to watch a mouth watering collection of supercars take to the track in the International GT Open where Soheil Ayari and Nicolas Marroc collected both the weekend spoils in their stunning Ferrari 458.

There was further single seater action in the European Formula 3 Open together with a host of MSVR support races to entertain spectators.
