The 2012 Season Starts Here

2012-03-new-season-media-passThe last week has seen a flurry of activity as championships big and small held their annual media days and opening tests, with some already even getting down to racing proper. The British Touring Car Championship heads strongly into a new all-turbo generation and this year boasts 10 models from nine different marques on its 24-car grid, including the technicolour liveried return of the MG name.

The BTCC season opener hits Brands Hatch on 1st April, followed a week later by the first rounds of the British GT Championship and the British F3 International Series at Oulton Park. While some single-seater formulae have struggled in recent times - Formula Renault postponing its UK series due to poor entries - British F3 continues to attract young talent. With recent champions including the Scuderia Toro Rosso pairing of Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne, its status as a stepping-stone to Formula 1 is hard to dispute.

National Motorsport Week Kicks Off with Many, Many MGs!

It's interesting that neither of National Motorsport Week's enclosing weekends coincided with any of the three big British championships, which I'd have thought would be a great opportunity to attract a few extra punters and guide them to the UK's top flight, but it does mean a free weekend to experience some down-to-Earth, honest to goodness club motorsport. And what better club to do it with than the MG Car Club? It's not the biggest of the single-marque clubs - that accolade belongs to the MG Owners Club - but the MGCC is responsible for organising a whole world of motorsport championships catering for the full spectrum of MG's history. Pretty much all of those championships were represented over the Club's biggest racing weekend of the year, MGLive! which filled Silverstone's Arena GP circuit.

With the full 3.67 miles of tarmac to play with, the strongly supported grids were packed in, often doubling up two series to a race to create huge grids of 34 cars or more, from the wonderful Pre '65 Historic Sportscars, through MGBs and Midgets, to the more recent MG Trophy for F's and Z's.

Thoroughbred Sports Cars at MGLive! The club had also packed in the attractions to make the event family friendly, from trade stands including MG Motor and their freshly launched MG6, a 'lifestyle pavilion' and a show area with long-time MG favourite and all-round crowd pleaser, Russ Swift (disappointingly doing his stunts in a BMW Mini). The historic theme of the event was carried through with vintage courtesy buses running the spectators to far flung corners of the circuit to take in the new 'Wing' pit building and to a test drive event on the Stowe circuit. Best of all, they'd ordered in the one thing that really does seem to boost the crowds at any motorsport event, whether it's National Motorsport Week or not - plenty of glorious sunshine!
