ASCAR Rocks Again With Days of Thunder 2!
29 May 2003
Sunday 8th June sees the return to Europe's fastest race circuit of
the ASCAR Days of Thunder Series with a full day of family entertainment.
Rockingham race circuit will rock to the sound of American V8 engines
as these 170mph saloon cars thunder around the unique 1.5-mile banked
oval track.
As well as the high octane, on-track action, there are plenty of things
to see and do to keep the whole family entertained. There will be special
guest appearances by the all girl RnB group THE HONEYZ and top ABBA
tribute band BJORN AGAIN.
THE HONEYZ are Celena, Naima and Heavenli. They have changed the face
of UK RnB and influenced many new UK artists including MisTeeq. Their
debut single 'Finally Found' sold more than half a million copies and
the Album, entitled "Wonder No 8", featured 5 top 10 singles
"End of the Line", "Love of a Lifetime", "Never
Let You Down" and "Won't Take It Lying Down", went Platinum.
The band have continued this success across the globe and are currently
writing new material.
BJORN AGAIN are the worlds top ABBA tribute band and bear an uncanny
resemblance the Swedish mega stars. They even have the backing of the
band they have modelled their careers on. ABBA's Benny Anderson said
in 1998, "fans had better make the most of Bjorn Again because
that's the closest they are going to get to seeing ABBA. ABBA will never
reform."
At
the last race round on May 11th 40,000 people witnessed Dutchman Michael
Vergers and Germany's Roland Rehfeld take a win a piece in two action
packed races, but a strong field of experienced drivers will be fighting
all the way at 170mph to deny either of them the double on Sunday 8th
June. Highly experienced Italian driver Max Papis will be taking to
the ASCAR grid for the first time but he has plenty of experience of
driving on the Rockingham Oval after taking part in the two Champ Car
Rockingham 500 races in 2001 and 2002. These races were the fastest
races ever staged in the UK and Max wowed the crowds with a fantastic
display of car control when he crossed the line at 208mph BACKWARDS
in the 2001 race. Not only did he recover the car without causing any
damage, he then went onto finish in a points scoring position at the
chequered flag.
Other entertainment on Sunday 8th June includes two pickup truck races,
Corby Wheels Project skate park, a fun fair, stunt displays, children's
activities - including the Lego Driving School, a Territorial Army display
and a creche. Tickets are £12 in advance and £15 on the
gate for adults, accompanied children 16 & under are free. The gates
open at 8am and track action begins at 10am.
