Taking Liberty's at The Rock
20 June 2003
For the second time this year Europe’s fastest race track will
rock to the sounds of a chart topping band. After weeks of speculation,
it has been confirmed that Rockingham will play host to LIBERTY X on
Sunday 27th July, when the group will be performing live at the ASCAR
Days of Thunder 3 race meeting.
It all started during the TV smash hit programme ‘Popstars’
when ten finalists were chosen from literally thousands of hopefuls.
The winning five formed the group ‘Hearsay’ and the other
five, Jessica, Tony, Kevin, Michelle and Kelli were expected to fade
away into obsurity. However, they didn’t! Now they have had a
string of hit records, including the smash No 1 ‘Just a Little’.
“We are extremely pleased to announce that Rockingham has signed
Liberty X to play at the third Days of Thunder race meeting,”
said Rockingham CEO Ashley Pover. “We have billed this event as
‘The Big One’ and in the pop world they don’t come
much bigger than Liberty X. This event will confirm Rockingham’s
status as the leading entertainment venue in this part of the country
and we will continue to bring big names to play at Rockingham this year
and next.”
Liberty X will add another dimension to an action packed day of events
at Rockingham, which will feature two races in this years ASCAR Days
of Thunder Championship. These 170mph American V8 muscle cars provide
some of the most thrilling racing in Europe. The 27th July event will
be the first races back in the UK after the ASCAR Days of Thunder Series
has visited Rockingham’s sister oval in Germany at Eurospeedway.
As well as two support races by the highly entertaining Pickup Trucks,
there is a full programme of entertainment with stunt displays by Terry
Grant, an aerial display by the Blue Eagles helicopter team, the Lego
racers driving school, the Corby Wheels skate park, a funfair and a
crèche for the younger members of the family. Also there is a
new feature for this event, a race around the oval by over twenty football
and sporting mascots as they attempt to beat Rockingham’s own
mascot Rocky the Rhino on his home turf.
Tickets cost £12 in advance and £15 on the gate for adults,
with accompanied children 16 and under receiving free entry. This makes
the Days of Thunder 3 meeting on July 27th a very affordable family
day out and one that you cannot afford to miss. “On Sunday 27th
July we expect Liberty X to provide us with the largest crowd ever seen
at Rockingham,” concluded Ashley Pover. “With only 52,000
tickets available, my advice to everyone is to book early to avoid disappointment.”
