Virgo Motorsport Joins British GT
28 July 2003
Virgo Motorsport is the latest team to enter a Ferrari 360 in the GT
Cup class of the British GT Championship and plans to join the series
at Rockingham this weekend (2/3 August).
The team will field Jim McWhirter's car in a trial outing, and the
Irish racer could be partnered by Formula Saloon front-runner Martin
Sims for the Rockingham weekend.
Belfast-based McWhirter was a leading Superkart racer before stopping
racing in 1984. He returned to the sport last season in the European
Ferrari 360 Challenge and continued in the series this year. He made
his Pirelli Maranello Ferrari Challenge debut at Donington over the
weekend (26/27 July) and will now sample British GT racing.
"We've always had ambitions to run in GT and this is a toe-in-the-water
exercise," says team boss Chris Warne. "It may lead to a fuller
campaign next year." Having run Ferrari UK entries in the 360 Challenge,
Warne has now established Virgo Motorsport and tends the Formula Saloon
cars of Garry and Michael Woodcock alongside the Ferrari 360.
