Weavers School in Northamptonshire are giving their pupils a step up
into the world of motorsport engineering by preparing and running a
Formula Ford racing car in the 2004 UK championship. The Lunar
Racing project was officially launched at Silverstone at the end
of last year. It is aimed at broadening the horizons of those involved
and give a sense of worth and achievement to students who prefer the
hands-on approach to pure academic study. It also provides an incentive
for those students to continue their education with sixth-form or college
courses.
Others schools can also benefit from the project with the car available
for visits, and data taken during the races to be made available for
mathematics and science lessons if required. School parties will also
be invited to watch practice and race sessions, increasing the profile
of the team which has already appeared on BBC Local News.
Piloting the car during its first season will be Katherine Impey, one
of Britains top 'up and coming' racing drivers who is making the switch
to Formula Ford from junior karting where she has been highly successful
in the past year. The team have also secured support from a number of
specialist companies including Central Auto Supplies, EuroBoss team
RGS Motorsport, the Stars of Tomorrow Karting Championship and engine
specialists Swiftune.
The Formula Ford Championship, now part of the British F3/GT support
package is a highly competitive entry-point to UK motor racing, and
the team are currently seeking further support for the forthcoming season,
both financial and in expertise to make the project a success.
