Stefan
Davis is Maidstone’s very own Rally Driver. Stefan Age 24 completed
his first full season of rallying competing in the Peugeot 205 Challenge,
the worlds biggest one make championship, and achieved some impressive
results (3rd, 2nd and nearly 1st on his last 3 events). The success
of 2003 gave Stefan the opportunity to become part of the Peugeot 1.9
Scholarship, designed to give promising young rally drivers the opportunities
to learn and develop the skills required to become a Professional Rally
Driver. The scholarship is being led by Ex-Works Peugeot Rally Team
Driver Kevin Furber and has the backing of a number of great names in
British Rallying like Johnny Milner - 2003 British Rally Champion and
Mark Higgins - 1997 British Rally Champion.
The first step for Stefan in the scholarship in 2004 was the fantastic
opportunity of a week of Rally Tuition in Sweden, led by 5 times Swedish
Rally Champion Hakan Erikson. Stefan benefited enormously from Hakan’s
knowledge and experience and learnt a few more secrets of how to win.
The tuition took place on a frozen lake and some Swedish Forest tracks
near Salen in North Sweden. A combination of a lake and a temperature
of –20 gives the perfect rally training ground. In an environment
with no virtually no grip every input to the car is magnified enormously
so deep thought and technical precision has to be made in every driving
moneuvere. Stefan stated, "I can’t wait to get back into
the British Forest and put into practice everything I have learnt out
here. My driving ability as developed so much in just one week I have
even surprised myself ".
Unfortunately, the path to professional rallying is not an easy one,
and even at the cheapest level is an expensive sport to compete in.

"I am not asking for a million pounds or even thousands if I could
simply get my tyre bill paid for this season it could mean the difference
between scholarship and no scholarship. What I am proposing is a "buy
me a tyre campaign", if I can simply get enough local business
to buy me a tyre at a cost of £65 each then maybe just maybe I
will be able to take this opportunity with both hands.
