Lunar Racing is Go!

Lunar Racing Formula Ford22 February 2004

Following the successful first test of their Jedi racing car, the educational Lunar Racing team, created by school teacher Paul Kneeshaw saw its Formula Ford take to the track for the first time this weekend. A bitterly cold Silverstone circuit was the stage for the first shakedown testing of the car, and the first drive in it for 16-year old Katharine Impey.

After its preparation by students at the Tresham Institute, the Formula Ford was out on track for the first time since it was acquired by the team. A few initial teething troubles blighted the first session of the day, but after a preliminary shakedown lap and check, Katharine was able to complete a good session of laps to get used to the new car.

Also at the circuit was the Jedi, prepared by the students of Weavers School in Wellingborough, which will also be driven by Katharine this season. The team of students led by Gemma Pentelow were now well into the stride of their second test day and their increased familiarity with the car, and pride in their work was clear to see as they went about their work preparing the Jedi for its time on track. Further laps were completed in this lighter car building Katharines confidence while final preparations were being made to the Formula Ford.

The time between sessions was also put to good use by the team, with representatives of the sponsor companies present to see the cars in their newly-stickered glory, and filmed interviews taking place for a documentary being produced by Phased Films for Sky TV.

The third and final session of the day was run entirely in the Formula Ford, the team finally able to see the cars performance in an extended run. Katharine was beginning to look comfortable in the car and despite the earlier gremlins, everything went well with tweaks improving the car until the session close.

With the reality of a highly competitive first-round just over a month away, there is still much to be done and the team will be returning to Silverstone on 27th February to further test both cars. There will then be a test at Donington on 1st April before the first round there on the 3rd.
