Shedden Returns as Favourite for the SEAT Cupra Championship Title

25 February 2004

Scottish motor racing ace Gordon Shedden will start the 2004 SEAT Cupra Championship as one of the favourites for title success after the talented 24-year old driver from Dunfermline confirmed that he will contest the series again in his Scottish Sun / Tracker backed Leon Cupra R.

Gordon, a former Scottish Young Driver of the Year award winner, raced in the 2003 Holiday Inn SEAT Cupra Championship and was never placed lower than third in the points table.  He eventually finishing runner-up in the series after recording one race win (at Oulton Park), two seconds and three third places.

He is also a senior instructor at Knockhill and at the British Touring Car Championship race there in 2001 Gordon qualified on pole for both races and finished 2nd in the Sprint Race and won the main Feature Race.  Naturally he is delighted that Knockhill has been added to the SEAT Cupra Championship calendar.

As in 2003, the SEAT Cupra Championship winning prize is a works touring car drive for the following season.  The total Championship prize fund is over £650,000, making it the most well rewarded motorsport series in the UK.

Gordon said: “I’m returning to the SEAT Cupra Championship this year to win the works touring car drive, and that’s what I’ll be focused on achieving.  It’s the biggest prize in British motorsport and having finished second last year I’m in a very strong position to go one better in 2004.  Everyone was new to the series in 2003 and it was my first full season of racing since 2000, but this year I can hit the ground running. The SEAT Cupra Championship is a great drivers’ series because the cars are as identical as they can possibly be – I would not be coming back unless I was totally convinced of that.  It’s also absolutely mega that the series is going to Knockhill this year as nobody knows the circuit better than me.  I’ve won in every car I’ve raced at Knockhill and I can’t see why I won’t be able to add SEAT to that list!”
