WilliamsF1 Supports Young Engineers

03 March 2004

For many UK students indebtedness incurred during first degree study is a real problem. Aware of the problems that face aspirant UK engineers, leading British motorsport engineering company, WilliamsF1, is to support UK students on the Cranfield University MSc Motorsport Engineering and Management. WilliamsF1 will provide bursary funding and offer MSc thesis projects with the company to two students commencing the Cranfield MSc course in October 2004. The scheme is specifically designed to encourage UK final year electronics, mechanical and design engineering undergraduates who wish to study motorsport engineering and management at postgraduate level.

Alex Burns, General Manager of WilliamsF1 comments, "As a stakeholder we have been highly impressed with the manner in which Cranfield has worked closely with the motorsport sector to develop the postgraduate programme we believe the industry needs. Of late we have recruited to our team, two Cranfield MSc students who have made a marked contribution to the operation and success of our team. Not only have they demonstrated technical ability, they have exhibited management qualities and the right aptitude for working in the highly demanding world of Formula One. Sir Frank Williams recognises that undergraduates are struggling with debts incurred during their first degrees. To encourage high calibre UK students to continue with their engineering, we are making available WilliamsF1 bursaries to the Cranfield MSc course."

Cranfield University has an association with WilliamsF1 going back some 20 years. In addition to research and testing, Cranfield has been running its dedicated postgraduate programme for four years. The course is managed through a steering committee, chaired by Sir Jackie Stewart, and has representation from leading motorsport companies and organisations. Cranfield boasts a strong Motorsport Alumni with ex-students working in international motorsport.
