'Rock' Meets Pop in
Smash Hits Tie Up
05 April 2004
Leading pop title Smash Hits has partnered with the UK's fastest motor
racing circuit, Rockingham, in an activity to promote the venue's combined
music and motor racing events.
Key locations around the venue, including
interview and 'green room' areas, will carry the magazine's branding
and the stage itself will be known as The Smash Hits Rockingham Stage.
The magazine will run features, interviews and competitions with the
stars performing at Rockingham throughout this year's season which
commences on May 2 and runs until October 3.
The events will also be
supported by an advertising campaign commencing in April. The line
up of confirmed artists appearing at Rockingham this year include Blue
who will kick off the series on May 2, supported by D-Side; Girls Aloud,
Jamelia, Lemar and Peter Andre will perform in the July 4 summer festival;
Big Brovaz and Javine will appear on August 1, followed by Mis-Teeq
on September 5. The performances will take place after a full day's
motor racing entertainment.
Lisa Smosarski, editor of Smash Hits, says: "We're
very excited to be involved with the Rockingham Days of Thunder events.
We endeavour to bring our readers closer to their favourite pop stars
and exciting live events allows us to do just that. Last year we covered
the Days of Thunder events because the family atmosphere and fantastic
access to big-name stars was perfect for Smash Hits; this year we're
delighted to actually be part of the team."
Rockingham, which is home to the Days of Thunder motor racing series,
started staging music events alongside its race meetings last year,
in a move intended to both increase gate sizes and encourage a more
diverse audience. Acts performing in 2003 included Busted, Liberty
X , Daniel Bedingfield and The Darkness.
Rockingham CEO Ashley Pover
says: "It has always been our aim
to position Rockingham as an entertainment venue rather than simply
a motor racing circuit, and bringing in top artists to perform on our
race days supports this objective. It's very gratifying to see Smash
Hits getting involved with our brand in this way, it obviously endorses
what we're doing here."
