More Points for Lunar Racing in All-Action Jedi Races at Silverstone

Lunar Racing Formula Jedi04 June 2004

The MSport-UK featured Lunar Racing team visited Silverstone for rounds 5 and 6 of the Formula Jedi Championship last weekend, 30-31 May. The team's 600cc Jedi ran well on Saturday, with driver Katharine Impey continuing her improvement at the circuit.

After qualifying 7th in class, 2 seconds behind class-leader Jodie Hemming, Katharine ran well in a race with more than its share of excitement. On lap 11 of the 16 lap race, Katharine was following Tim Cameron when a freak fuel leak caused his car to burst into flames on the start/finish straight. Avoiding the oil and debris, Katharine was able to continue to a fifth-in-class finish, 11th overall.

Sunday qualifying saw a tighter-packed field, with Katharine little more than a second behind fastest-in-class David Cameron, the Lunar Racing car starting from 6th in class, 13th on the grid. A typically close-fought race produced more action in the 600cc class as David Cameron took desperate measures to keep his position from hard-charging Jodie Hemming. His hard driving eventually lead to a collision with Joss Thompson at Brooklands, ending his race early, with Jodie taking her second class-win of the weekend. Katharine ran well through the race, but car trouble on the final lap saw her drop a place to finish 8th in class - welcome points, but not the result that initial performance had promised.

Katharine and the Lunar Racing Team students of Weavers School in Wellingborough, are now looking forward to the next rounds at Brands Hatch on 12-13th June.

Also at Silverstone, Lunar Racing' Mygale Formula Ford was also running in the Clubmans Formula Ford 1800 race, driven by local lad Steven Baker. Unfamiliar with the car's set up, Steven started from 15th place on the grid, but with luck against him suffered engine failure on only the third lap of the race, ending his weekend.
