June 2004
The Formula Jedi Championship continued its tour of the UK last weekend
12-13 June, stopping at a sunny Brands Hatch circuit for more exciting
racing as part of the A20 Race Weekend. The weekend also signified
the launch of the official series web site at www.FormulaJedi.com by
MSportUK - the championship's web sponsor for the 2004 season. The site
has a comprehensive image gallery, driver profiles, the latest championship
news and a forum to bring together the teams and drivers in the series,
and track the exciting progress of the Jedi year.
Going
into the round 7 on Saturday, Jodie Hemming and Luke Kidsley were
leading classes
A
and
B repectively,
with Jodie having taken six-straight class-wins and amassing a points
score more than double that of her nearest rival, Adam Weller. With
Class A's front runners all determined to put an end to Jodie's winning
streak, some frantic racing was guaranteed. Likewise in 1000cc Class
B, where Luke Kidsley had gained a 14 point lead after wins at Silverstone
and Snetterton, but where David Roper and second-placed Alistair
Goss both had wins under their belts to which they were looking to
add more.
Race one saw a frantic battle for the lead as pole-sitter John Lord,
failed to finish, and front runner Luke Kidsley ended up in the gravel
at Druids after contact with Miles Hulfords 600cc car. Jedi's own Frazer
Corbyn powered his Mk6 Jedi from fourth on the grid to the victory,
followed home by Jack Anderson and David Roper winning the battle for
third with David Hodgson. Frazer also broke the Jedi lap record by
a clear second, turning in a 46.143s time on lap 10.
Jodie Hemming continued her domination of class A finishing fifth
overall and leading the class by eleven seconds to Joss Thompson. Katharine
Impey, clearly enjoying her new car took the final place on the podium.
Sunday saw even hotter weather for the Jedi racers and even tighter
racing. Frazer was unable to challenge for a second win of the day
after a throttle cable break caused a frustrating retirement. No problems
though for Luke Kidsley, the nose of his Jedi patched up following
Saturdays collision and charging hard to win with a four second advantage
over Jack Anderson, safeguarding his championship lead. Alistair Goss
also got his first finish of the weekend, with third place.
Back in Class A, the pressure was on throughout the field, with Daniel
Cook recovering from a long spin on the run down to Graham Hill Bend
before clashing with Gary Coburn at Surtees, both cars ending up on
the grass with damaged wishbones. At the front of the pack Jodie wasn't
having things all her own was as Joss Thompson was on the attack, desperate
for that elusive victory. A close battle eventually saw Jodie take
her 8th consecutive class win in 8th overall, but with Joss little
over a second behind at the line. Adam Weller took the 600cc third
place.
