All Scottish Team Aims for SEAT Cupra Championship Title

14 January 2005

An all-Scottish team will bid for the SEAT Cupra Championship title in 2005, when Paisley-based SRE Motorsport runs a Leon Cupra R for up and coming 21-year old Kilmarnock driver Jonathan Young.

Run by Jimmy Sime (Team Principal) and his son Barry (Finance and Commercial Director), the family behind SRE Motorsport  has a great deal of experience in both saloons and single-seaters and is one, and possibly the only, Scottish team to be involved in the TOCA package.

Jonathan is sponsored for the second year by the UK’s largest commercial vehicle insurer, Commercial Vehicle Direct, who is proud to be supporting its driver in the SEAT Cupra Championship. Jonathan is also managed by Roger Phillips of Action Resources Ltd.

Since beginning his motorsport career at the age of 16, Jonathan has been highly successful in every category he has competed in.  In 2001 he became the British Winter Quad Supermoto Champion, he was the P&O British Quad Supermoto Champion in 2002, in 2003 he won both the Scottish Saloon & Sportscar (in a Westfield) and BRSCC British Winter Saloon Car Championships (driving an ex-works Nissan Primera Supertourer) and finished runner-up in the BARC British Westfield series.  Last year he won several rounds of the European Supertouring Challenge, breaking the lap record in his Nissan at every circuit he raced on.

Jonathan Young said: "Touring cars is where I want to be and the SEAT Cupra Championship looks like the best step towards that.  Even though this is only my third season, I’ve got a lot of high power front-wheel drive experience, so the aim is to go out and try and win the title at my first attempt.  I hope that doesn’t sound too cocky and I know it’s going to be a very competitive series, but that's the aim."

Barry Sime said: "Jonathan is a very ambitious driver and we aim to back up his ambition by giving him a very competitive car to race. The name SRE Motorsport is a fairly new outfit, but there is no reason why we can’t challenge for the title and be very successful.  It would be big-headed of me to say we are going to win the title, but that’s certainly what we will be trying to do."
