Rachel to Bid for Powertrain Challenge Victory
18 February 2005
Rachel Green - Caterham Motorsport's first woman champion - has her
sights set on a return to the top step of the podium this season. She
is to contest the Powertrain Caterham Challenge at the wheel of a Gama
Aviation-backed R400 and says winning is her aim.
"I am so focused this year," said the 2002 Caterham Graduates Champion. "I
am training five times a week with one target - to win races."
Rachel, 33, stepped up to R400 power for the first time last season
and was immediately successful, becoming the first-ever woman to
claim an Autosport
Caterham Eurocup
pole position. She finished the year 10th overall, and dissatisfied: "I'm
in motor sport to win and last year was a bit of a washout for me, although it
was good experience."
Green plans a full season in Caterham's top-line UK championship,
combined with occasional Eurocup outings with her Fauldsport-prepared
car.
She will have plenty of male rivals. Hyperion Motorsport plans to
mount a four-R400 attack with David Dyson, Nathan Bell, Ewan McIntyre
and Nick Payne. The Minister
team will meanwhile field Ben Dezille Butler and Arrowstar have registered
two cars, one for Jack Newland and another for UK-based Japanese banker Soh
Fukushima.
Last year's R400 Challenge fifth-placed driver, Will Mitcham, plans a return.
This year the Powertrain Caterham Challenge will accommodate Roadsport
A cars also, and a healthy grid is forming. A top-seven finisher
from 2004, James
Gardiner, leads an entry which includes Dave O'Carroll, Patrick Maher, Riki
Nash, Tony
Hawkins and Stuart Smith.
Caterham motorsport enjoys the backing of Powertrain Ltd, Autosport,
Motorsport News, evo, Arch Motors, Bilstein, Brian James Trailers,
Cheesman Products,
Comma, Cooper-Avon Tyres, Fairmont Insurance, The Finance Partnership,
Harrington Generators
International, MG XPOWER, Mitchell Cotts, PTP and Stack.
