Second British F3 Win for Charlie Kimball
at Thruxton
30 May 2005
Carlin Motorsport's Charlie Kimball continued his brilliant form
of the day by winning race two at Thruxton with as much ease as he
secured victory in the first race.
Leading the field from the start, initially followed by Alvaro Parente in the
no 14 Dallara and Marko Asmer, he extended his lead throughout, and also got
a new lap record of 1m 06.921s, lowering the mark set earlier in the day by Christian
Bakkerud. "I basically followed the same plan," Kimball reflected. "I
was focusing to get really fast laps and after the re-start, once I had some
space, I could settle down and bring the win home."
Brazilians Danilo Dirani in the no 1 P1 Motorsport Lola and no 28 Bruno
Senna
(Raikönnen Robertson Racing) made contact in the chicane in the early stages
of the race, which resulted in both cars retiring and the Safety car on track.
Tim Bridgman (Hitech Racing) had a demon re-start into fourth, but too much speed
into the last chicane saw him touching the back of Alvaro Parente's Carlin car.
The Hitech Racing driver retired and Parente unable to finish in the points after
losing time in the resulting spin.
Marko Asmer from Hitech Racing came second yet again and is now the
new Series
leader. "Obviously I was pushing hard to win this race," Asmer commented. "I
overtook Alvaro Parente at the re-start and put in consistent lap times. But
I was simply not quick enough and had to settle for second place."
Christian
Bakkerud (Carlin Motorsport) finished in third place, just as in the first
race. After a pretty ordinary race for the Danish driver, Bakkerud
said
afterwards: "I was pretty much by myself all race. I took it easy even though
I saw Ryan [Lewis] closing in on me, but I kept it clear."
Ryan Lewis (T-Sport) finished in fourth place after he made a superb
move on Raikkonen Robertson Racing's Dan Clarke.
Barton Mawer also won his second race
of the day for T-Sport. "This race
was easier for me than the first won," Mawer admitted. "It has definitely
been the best weekend for us so far in the whole season." Running on limited
budget, Mawer hopes to be back in action for the next round of the British F3
International Series, which will take place at Castle Combe in three weeks. "It's
looking good that I will be racing at Castle Combe," he commented on that
matter.
The Australian was closely followed by Promatecme's Charlie Hollings and Juho
Annala, who finished in third place for Alan Docking Racing.
