British rally legend Gwyndaf Evans is to join the grid of the Volkswagen
Racing Cup next weekend (23/24 Sept).
The 47-year-old Hankook Motorsports ace has been invited to swap his
four-wheel-drive rally machine for the championship's Polo GTI
'celebrity car' for the Silverstone rounds of the championship.
Gwyndaf is looking forward to the experience: "I'm not entirely
sure what I may have let myself in for, but I'm hoping it will
be a nice weekend! It was bit of a surprise to be asked because my racing
experience is very limited, but I am going to get some tips from Barbara
Armstrong and try to enjoy the race."
Volkswagen Racing Cup co-ordinator Armstrong is a former British Ladies
Rally Champion and was once team-mate to Evans with SEAT.
Volkswagen Racing UK director Sam Roach said: "We are looking forward
to seeing him out in the Polo GTI. It's a car which has shown
promise in the hands of various racing journalists this season, and
I think with Gwyndaf at the wheel it is really going to turn some heads.
"It's also nice to see a driver of Gwyndaf's stature
agreeing to compete. Jason Plato raced with us a couple of seasons ago;
the other competitors enjoy the chance to share the circuit with them."
Evans, from Dinas Mawddwy, won his first rally title in 1988 when he
claimed the British Group N crown for the first time. He went on to
win the outright British Rally Championship crown in 1996, and was twice
more the Group N victor.
He is fresh from success on the Ulster Rally, on which the SJR Hankook
team driver was the top British Rally Championship finisher.
Gwyndaf's previous racing experience is limited to a sports car
event at Silverstone and a saloon outing with SEAT at Brands Hatch.
