Avon Tyres to Back Caterham Superlight Challenge
16 November 2006
Caterham's premier UK race series, the Superlight Challenge, will benefit
from headline sponsorship from Avon Tyres in 2007, it is announced today.
The championship - styled The Avon Tyres Caterham Superlight Challenge
- will once again enjoy key support event status at rounds of the British
Formula 3 International Series and the Avon Tyres British GT Championship.
With classes for the newly introduced Cosworth-powered Superlight and
the popular R400 model, the Challenge will, says Caterham Motorsport
Director Magnus Laird, be a major crowd-pleaser: "All the early
indications suggest that we shall have a sizeable grid in 2007 and that
can only add to the spectacle. The two 30-minute Caterham races always
provide the closest and most exciting racing at the GT/F3 meetings,
and we can guarantee more of the same on what is by any standards a
cracking calendar of events and circuits.
"We are delighted to be announcing this new association with Avon,
Caterham's staunchest supporter for many years, and look forward to
a new and even more successful relationship."
Seven double-header meetings are planned, including visits to the Silverstone
and Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuits, twin races at the Donington Park
Caterham Jubilee weekend scheduled for early June and a finale at Brands
Hatch in October alongside the Formula Ford Festival.
Julian Baldwin, Avon Tyres motorsport boss and MD of Cooper Tire Europe,
said: "Avon Tyres and Caterham Motorsport have a very long, and
very successful history together, with Avon being the sole supplier
of tyres for the marque's various tiers of motor racing for 15 years.
We look forward to strengthening our alliance with one of the UK's most
highly respected and evocative sports car firms in 2007, by putting
our name to Caterham's top national race series. Together, I am confident
that we will help the Superlight championship to continue to go from
strength to strength and I anticipate another fantastic year of racing."
