Autocar and Autosport International Set New Speed Record

18 December 2006

Autocar in association with Autosport International set a new indoor speed world record at the NEC, Birmingham, on Tuesday 12 December by setting a speed of 82 mph over a 210-metre run through Hall 5. Cars totalling £750,000 were put through their paces in a unique time trial session, each car having three timed runs.

The winning time was set by owner driver Phil Cooper, 21 years old from Warrington, in his Autograss Special powered by a Toyota engine. Phil is currently Overall Series Points Champion of all Classes in the 2006 British Autograss Series.

While attempting the record Autocar editor at large Steve Sutcliffe managed to set another new record – the indoor road car speed record in an Ariel Atom which reached 76.8 mph.

Results will be submitted to the Guinness Book of World Records for approval and certification. Times were recorded by a Vericom VC3000PC Performance Tester and were officiated by independent data company Datron Technology who are recognised by Guinness.

Autocar will display the cars that took part in the speed challenge and screen footage of the day’s events on their stand at Autosport International, 11-14 January 2007.

From the empty halls of the NEC for this unique event, Autosport International will fill more than one million square feet of all things motorsport, race teams and drivers, and the world’s biggest motorsport show continues to attract leading car manufacturers and independent sportscar companies keen to launch their new marques to the world.
