Superlight Challenge Grid Strengthens

09 February 2007

The Avon Tyres Caterham Superlight Challenge is enjoying its biggest influx of new competitors for several seasons.

In addition to the many drivers planning to move up from lower divisions of Caterham racing, several newcomers are also planning to take part. They include relative novices Steve Ross, who has bought the Superlight of former Eurocup Champion Jamie Constable and who will race with the Ultimate Motorsport team, and Glen Denny, who has joined Clive Richards' Colards Motorsport team for 2007.

Another newcomer to the championship is London-based banker Christopher Cappuccini, 30. After several seasons of karting he is taking the plunge into full-blown racing, also with Ultimate Motorsport.

Last year's double Roadsport Champion, Gary Halcrow, will be one of Denny's Colards team-mates. He moves up to Superlight power in company with fellow former Roadsport men Clive Coote, Ron Johnson, Sean Nash, Chris Bialan and David Bend.

Among the experienced Superlight racers planning to return are 2005 Champion Will Mitcham and the marque's leading lady exponent, Rachel Green. F1 engine builder James Gardiner will be back on track also, as will rapid Scotsman Doug Scott.

The reigning R400 Champion, Pat Gormley, is also moving up to Superlight power for 2007, with 750 Motor Club double Caterham champion, Peter Ratcliff, is planning a UK campaign also.

This season's schedule of races is expanded to 14 and the championship enjoys key support status alongside the prestigious British F3 and British GT Championships. Five of the championship's seven double-header meetings are GT/F3 events; there will be twin Superlight races also at June's Donington Caterham 7 golden jubilee meeting and in October at Brands Hatch with the Formula Ford Festival.

Backers for Caterham Motorsport's UK and European race series include Bilstein, Brian James Trailers, Cheesman Products, Circuit Driver, Cooper-Avon Tyres, Demon Tweeks, evo, HSBC Insurance Brokers, Mitchell Cotts, Motorsport News, Stack and Steel Fabrications.
