Double Cupra Victory for Nordstrom at Thruxton
07 May 2007
Freddy Nordstrom (Weybridge) took a sensational pair of wins at the
latest round of the SEAT Cupra Championsip. Driving his Advent Motorsport
prepared SEAT Leon R Class, the Surrey teenager dominated events with
a spectacular brace of drives in the competitive series, fresh on the
heels of his win at the last round.
Freddy’s pace was evident from the outset when once again he
was at the forefront of the R Class field in qualifying. In the R Class
he took third on the grid for Race One, but was once again on pole
position for Race Two, his third pole of the year.
The first race of the weekend’s double header was to see Freddy
pick his way through the field to the lead after dropping to 4th after
the start. Constant lap times and faultless driving saw Freddy come
home for his second win of the year, taking fastest lap honours on
the way.
The second race was to be an altogether more dramatic event. Freddy
used his R Class pole position to good advantage and took the lead
but with incidents elsewhere causing a safety car period to be called
the field remained bunched up. When racing resumed everyone was eager
to get away and in the melee Freddy touched the dirty side of the track
entering Goodwood corner and went off the circuit.
“The barrier was coming at me very quickly!” said a characteristically
calm Freddy afterwards. “I had the car on full lock, just missed
the barrier and was able to recover the car and get back on track.”
His quick excursion had put him down into 7th place, and in many eyes
surely out of contention but Freddy had other ideas! In a determined
drive that confounded onlookers Freddy was putting in laps with times
akin to qualifying pace and was soon on the tail of the leaders. Back
in contention he set about picking his rivals off and lead the last
two laps to take a stunning victory – completing his hat trick
of three wins in the last three rounds!
“It has been a fantastic weekend, a pole, two fastest laps and
two wins” said Freddy. “I just wanted to get out there,
show what pace we have and that whatever happens, it isn’t over
till the chequered flag drops! The car has a fluid leak but that will
easily be mended before the next round and if anything it is amazing
that is all that needs attention after what I asked of the car in the
second race today!”
Freddy’s superb weekend further catapults him into Championship
contention. He now lies 2nd in the Championship just a single point
behind Henry Vaulkhard. With his title ambitions firmly on track Freddy’s
next race is at Croft in North Yorkshire on 3rd June. After being top
of the class at Thruxton it is back to the classroom proper for Freddy
as he sits his A-levels in what is proving to be a very busy year for
the talented youngster.
Freddy has recently launched a website, www.freddynordstrom.co.uk,
where you can follow his seasons progress.
