Race Fans in for Acton-Packed Day at Donington
Park Says BTCC Boss
30 April 2008
The boss of Britain's premier motor racing series - the HiQ MSA British
Touring Car Championship (BTCC) - believes fans from across the East
Midlands are in for some of the most exciting wheel-to-wheel action
of the year at the Donington Park circuit this Sunday (4 May).
Donington, just off junction 24 of the M1 motorway, stages the BTCC's
three latest rounds of 2008 and with the race to win the UK's most
prestigious motor sport title this year being followed live by the
ITV4 cameras the stakes are as high as ever.
Alan Gow, who has been in charge of the BTCC for some 15 of the championship's
50 years - 2008 marks its golden anniversary - says the Donington track
lends itself perfectly to the fender-bending action that has made the
BTCC famous the world over and is predicting three great races for
fans.
BTCC Series Director Gow said: "A look-back down the years shows
that some of the most dramatic moments in BTCC history have been played
out in front of the Donington crowds.
"We've had team-mates crashing out together, race wins and titles
decided on the last lap, shock results and plenty of controversy and
arguments among the leading drivers. I see no reason why that tradition
won't continue this Sunday.
"The Donington circuit has a high average speed and there are
plenty of places for the drivers to have a go at overtaking one another.
Of our current grid there are probably as many as 16 drivers all capable
of winning races - we've had five different winners from the opening
six rounds. "In fact I predict Donington's 2008 BTCC race day
will likely produce some of the most exciting action of the UK motor
sport calendar."
In addition to the BTCC's three headline races at Donington on Sunday
there will be nine more races from a variety of supporting categories.
Furthermore, at lunchtime the new 750bhp Superleague Formula car will
perform demonstration laps of the circuit while, in the air, there
will be a flypast by a WWII Spitfire fighter 'plane from RAF Battle
of Britain Memorial Flight. More family entertainment has also been
organised by Donington.
Admission for children aged 15 and under is FREE. Adults can still
order tickets for £23.00 by visiting Donington's website www.donington-park.co.uk or calling 01332 810048 - prices include access to the BTCC paddock
and the pit lane walkabout when the public can meet the star BTCC drivers
for autographs.
