MG Shows Solid Performance in British Rally
Championship Season Opener
28 April 2003
Gwyndaf
Evans and Howard Davies had a successful start to their British Rally
Championship campaign when they brought their Super1600 MG ZR home 2nd
in Class and fourth overall in the opening round at Gateshead.
The event was divided into two legs, which consisted
of two super-special stages and three demanding stages in the Kielder
forest. After the first leg Evans and Davies lay third in Class and
third overall despite having come up against thick fog and driving rain.
Gwyndaf commented: “The conditions on Friday evening were probably
the worst I have ever experienced in the Kielder forest. The fog meant
that visability was down to about 20-30 metres but we knew we had a
job to do.”
Following the overnight in parc ferme another six gruelling
stages in the forest lay ahead for the MG ZR, which it coped with conditions
admirably. By the end of the second leg they finished 2nd in Class and
fourth overall just missing out on a podium. On completing the first
round Gwyndaf said: “I’m so pleased that CMC and MG Sport
& Racing have pulled the project together. The car performed really
well with no major problems. All the gremlins, which we experienced
last year stayed away and we now have a fantastic platform on which
to build.”
Peter Young, managing director of Creative Media Communications
said: "This was the first outing of the CMC/MG ZR Super 1600 and
what a result. It was great to see Gwyndaf and Howard back in form together,
a fact that was well appreciated by the fans who clapped and cheered
as the black and green MG sliced through the Keilder Forest stages.
A great effort from the whole team and a good start to the first event
of the championship."
Fellow MG ZR driver Tony Jardine together with co-driver
Kevin Eason also completed all stages to finish third in Class (F2000)
and 25th overall in his Group N.
