Regulations Overview - The
BARC's Kumho BMW Championship is open to any production BMW sold
in the UK. It provides close competition in four classes
split by a power to weight ratio. Street legal control
tyres are supplied by Kumho, and with only one compound and pattern
available, costs are kept to a minimum. This year, power
output is policed by on-board datalogging equipment that will ensure vehicles
comply with the regulations at all times. The car weight includes
the driver, thus allowing elderly, portly gentlemen to be competitive with stick-like
youths. With a minimum weight of 1050kg and chassis lightening prohibited,
the cars are strong, fast, reliable and cost effective to run.
The
SELOC BMW Challenge is a one-make race series run by SELOC, the
Lotus entusiasts club.
A number of SELOC track day regulars had been thinking about getting into motorsport
and going racing in a Lotus is an expensive excercise so alternatives
were considered. The BMW E30 (3-series from the late eighties)
fitted the bill for a cheap and
robust car with all-important rear wheel drive.
Only the BMW E30, the 3-series car made between 1983 and 1990, is allowed and
only the 2-door 318i and 320i are permitted, with the M40 or M20
engines
respectively.
