Renault UK is widely regarded as one of the world's foremost junior
single-seater categories having launched the careers of
Formula One World Drivers, Kimi Raikkonen, Lewis Hamilton, Heikki
Kovalainen, Pedro de la Rosa, Antonio Pizzonia and Le Mans 24 Hours
winner Guy Smith.
The championship is part of the
support package to the British Touring Car Championship, and also links
up with the British round of the World Series by Renault at Silverstone.
In 2007 the event drew a crowd of 135,000 fans during the course of
the weekend, placing it second only to the British Grand Prix in terms
of attendance.
The Clio Cup calendar follows that of Formula Renault and features
the Clio
Cup race car, a 2.0-litre 205hp pure racer based on the road-going
Clio Renaultsport 197. More than 60 cars were sold in the UK in
the first year, making it Renault Sport’s most successful Clio
Cup racer.
Former Renault one-make champions including World Touring
Car champion Andy Priaulx and BTCC favourites Jason Plato and Tom Onslow-Cole.
